The American Red Cross in Greater New York (ARC/GNY) operates the largest and busiest disaster-response program in the nation, providing assistance, compassion and comfort to as many as 100,000 New Yorkers affected by approximately 3,000 emergencies—home fires, building collapses, floods and more—each year.
ARC/GNY relief workers—volunteers and employees—arrive at emergencies within minutes, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, an average of 8 times a day, and provide food, shelter, health services and mental-health counseling to the thousands of adults and children affected by these emergencies.
The American Red Cross in Greater New York augments the efforts of city agencies to ensure that the basic needs of New Yorkers are being met during times of disaster. Additionally, ARC/GNY provides support to first responders, and sends relief workers to disaster responses across the country as needed.
