2005 Hurricane Relief


National Response to Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma:

Financial Assistance
More than $1.4 billion in emergency financial aid was distributed to more than 1.2 million families or nearly 4 million people

Sheltering Operations
More than 3.4 million overnight stays in 1,100 shelters across 27 states

Evacuees Sheltered
The Red Cross special accommodations program, funded by FEMA and administered by the Red Cross, provided more than 6.8 million overnight hotel stays for hurricane survivors

Relief Workers
More than 225,000 trained workers--95% of whom were volunteers--from 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands were involved in the relief effort

Feeding Operations
The Red Cross, in coordination with the Southern Baptist Convention, served more than 30 million hot meals and 34 million snacks to date

More than 340,600 people have registered on line and more than 225,900 have called the hotline

Disaster Mental Health
More than 800,000 people received Red Cross Disaster mental health services

Total Funds Raised
$2.1 billion in gifts and pledges

Local Response to Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma:

Responders
The Greater New York Chapter sent 263 responders to help in the relief efforts

Call Center
The New York Hurricane Call Center, staffed by 700 newly trained volunteers operated 12 hours a day for two months and handled more than 19,300 calls

Helping Survivors
More than 1,760 families from the region received Red Cross family assistance. More than 400 Katrina evacuees were housed in Red Cross arranged hotel rooms. The chapter provided three meals a day to hundreds of evacuees for up to three months.

Volunteer Training
The chapter trained 2,513 new Disaster Service volunteers.
