Government Affairs Intern
| Department: | Government Relations Department |  | | Location: | 520 West 49th Street New York, NY 10019 |  | | Opportunity Description: | The Government Affairs Intern will assist in outreach efforts for city and state elected officials. The internship involves assisting the Director of Government Relations by researching current policy topics, drafting memos and letters to federal, state, and local policymakers, and attending meetings and legislative visits. |  | | Responsibilities: | - Assist in outreach activities to federal, state and local elected officials including faxes, phone calls, scheduling meetings and drafting outreach materials under the guidance of the Government Relations Director.
- Track the Chapter’s disaster responses and inform elected officials of disaster responses in their districts through letters and phone calls.
- Attend meetings with the Director of Government Relations and elected officials as well as deploy to disaster responses if necessary with the Director.
- Work with the Director of Government Relations on drafting of grant proposals seeking government funding from federal, state and local legislators.
- Support the chapter’s legislative agenda by tracking legislation on the federal, state and local level that may affect the chapter and/or Red Cross mission. Assist the Director of Government Relations in drafting letters of support or opposition when necessary.

|  | | Time Commitment: | 2 – 3 days per week, a minimum of 3 hours per day |  | | Qualifications: | - Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel and Word) and internet research
- Some understanding of the legislative process preferred
- Willingness to travel throughout the five boroughs of New York City, Lower Hudson Valley and Albany, NY.
- Business/business casual attire required
