The American Red Cross has launched a new fundraising drive in anticipation of a very active hurricane season that could be made even worse by the Gulf Coast oil spill.The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts three to seven major hurricanes this year. Major hurricanes are those Category 3, 4 and 5 storms that do the most damage — such as Hurricanes Andrew, Katrina, Rita and Wilma — with winds of more than 111 mph. NY Red Cross relief workers provided compassionate assistance to those affected by a fatal 3-alarm fire that tore through a two-story home at 302 Nicholas Avenue on Staten Island at approximately 4 a.m. this morning. According to fire officials, the blaze, in which a mother and her four children lost their lives, began on the second floor, then spread to the attic and the roof. On July 7, a brutally hot day with temperatures reaching into the triple digits, the NY Red Cross responded to two 5-alarm fires that affected two residential buildings (248 apartments) in Queens. The first fire occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. at 86-16 60th Avenue in Elmhurst; the second struck a few hours later at 16-66 Bell Boulevard in Bayside. UPDATE July 11,2010 – The NY Red Cross is continuing to assist people affected by two 5-alarm fires that struck residential buildings in Rego Park and Bayside on July 7th. A total of 37 people whose apartments remain in “vacate” status due to safety concerns spent the night at the Red Cross shelter, located at PS 102 (55-22 Van Horn Street) in Elmhurst, Queens, on July 9th; 35 people spent the night on July 10th.
