This morning New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver invited NY Red Cross CEO Theresa Bischoff to a press conference in Manhattan to announce the re-occupation of 22 James Street, an apartment building in Chinatown that was destroyed in a 5-alarm fire on February 24, 2009. As a result of that fire, more than 200 people were left homeless and there was one fatality. The American Red Cross in Greater New York concluded relief operations for the Lower Hudson Valley winter storm on March 1, closing the last of four county-supported shelters it had opened in Orange, Rockland and Putnam Counties on February 26 and 27. Almost 900 Haitian earthquake survivors have reconnected with their loved ones outside of the country through the Red Cross’ Restoring Family Links program.
