Community Outreach
As a part of our mission to help people avoid, prepare for,
and cope with emergencies, the Red Cross is proud to offer a variety of
community outreach programs. In addition to our
Preparing for the Unexpected
program, this year we reached thousands of people, including children at
schools, men and women at workplaces, and seniors at community centers. By
request, we also tailored our presentations for people with disabilities and
limited vision.
Through our
Til Help Arrives
program, we educate seniors on the steps to follow during an emergency.
Our
Whales Tales
program teaches children water safety techniques and our
Basic Aid Training
explains important First Aid concepts. In our
Fire and Burn Safety
program, we teach kids how to avoid or escape fires and our
Scrubby Bear
curriculum tells children about the importance of washing their hands and
being aware of germs.
Kids get first-hand experience during the classes. During
Fire and Burn Safety, for example, they practice stop, drop, and roll
techniques so they know what to do if a fire occurs. For Basic Aid Training,
the children practice the abdominal thrust during class so they will be prepared
to help someone who is choking. We make learning these important skills
enjoyable and accessible.
