Health and Safety Services
Helping people prepare for emergencies and save lives is
the cornerstone of our mission. This year, more than 96,000 New Yorkers learned
how to prevent injuries and respond calmly and effectively when emergencies
strike. We teach CPR, Automated External Defibrillator (AED), First Aid, and
water safety to individuals as well as groups and corporations.
For more than 85 years, our programs have been developed in
collaboration with experts from the fields of medicine and aquatics and reflect
up-to-date information and techniques. Certification in a Red Cross program is
recognized nationwide because we deliver consistent programming from New York to
California.
Red Cross Health and Safety courses
are offered almost every day of the week at our 150 Amsterdam Avenue
headquarters or one of our chapter or service center locations throughout the
Greater New York area, including sites in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, Harlem,
Staten Island, and Putnam, Sullivan, Rockland and Orange Counties. For
corporations, community-based organizations or social groups, we offer the
option of private group training.
Authorized Provider:
Con Edison and many other large organizations have used the Authorized Provider
program, in which one or more Red Cross instructors on a company’s staff are
trained to teach Red Cross courses directly to their employees.
Red Cross courses include:
First Aid Programs
American Red Cross First Aid programs have been helping people prevent injury
and respond to emergencies since 1909. First Aid programs for all age groups
help bring safety home. Among the classes offered are Standard First Aid,
Community First Aid and Safety, First Aid Basics, Babysitter's Training, Sport
Safety Training, and First Aid - Responding to Emergencies.
CPR Programs
Each year, the Red Cross teaches millions of people how to respond appropriately
to cardiac and breathing emergencies through training in Adult, Infant, Child
and professional level CPR training. Red Cross CPR courses meet OSHA
requirements and reflect the most recent changes in emergency cardiac care. Our
newest CPR course for the workplace includes Automatic External Defibrillator
Training, the newest technology available to treat sudden cardiac arrest.
Aquatic Programs
Since 1914, the American Red Cross has been a leader in aquatic education.
Professional level programs, including Lifeguard Training, Lifeguard Instructor
Training and Water Safety Instructor Training, are trusted nationwide by
employers at camps, aquatic facilities, and state parks and recreational
centers.
Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)
Sudden cardiac arrest strikes approximately 700 times a day in the U.S., causing
approximately 250,000 deaths every year. Using an Automated External
Defibrillator (AED) is the definitive treatment for sudden cardiac arrest. The
Red Cross can tell you how to implement an AED program at your place of business
and meet requirements for the New York State Public Access Defibrillation law.
Child Care
The Red Cross is committed to helping keep children safe.
Our babysitter’s training course gives adolescents the information and skills
necessary to provide safe and responsible care for children in the absence of
parents or guardians.
The Healthy Child Care course covers preventing child
injuries, supervision guidelines, preventing disease transmission, caring for
ill children, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and recognizing and reporting child
abuse.
