Fiscal Year 2004 Statistics
Responding
Throughout the year, the Red Cross responded to
3,157 local disaster incidents and offered assistance to 10,650
people. In addition, our Mental Health specialists helped 24,715
people.
Preparing
Red Cross
instructors trained 85,009 people in lifesaving skills. In
addition, we trained 42,095 New Yorkers through Red Cross
community-based outreach programs, such as Preparing for the
Unexpected and 'Til Help Arrives for adults, and
children's programs such as FaBS (Fire and Burn Safety), BAT
(Basic Aid Training), Longfellow's WHALE Tales (Water Habits Are
Learned Early) and Scrubby Bear, which teaches the
importance of hand washing in the fight against germs and disease.
More than 200,000 people received preparedness information and
training during two special public events in lower and midtown
Manhattan.
Serving
Our Telephone Reassurance Club volunteers made
2,163 calls, providing support and companionship to the elderly.
We provided 8,320 services through our Armed
Forces Emergency Services program, including the transmission of
important messages such as birth announcements and death notices to
military personnel, veterans, and their families.
We assisted 261 families with international
tracing, messages, and social services as well as through Project
Search, a service that helps to determine the fate of loved ones
lost during the Holocaust.
All of the above
could not have happened without the incredible 3,603 volunteers who
generously donated their time and expertise in the pursuit of
helping others.
