Notable Activities in 2007:
Red Cross Assists Jefferson Avenue Residents After a 3-alarm fire broke out at 977 Jefferson Avenue on Sunday, March 9 at 12:46 a.m., Chapter relief workers came to the aid of 8 families—22 adults and 16 children. Many received emergency aid for food and clothing, and Red Cross provided 6 families of 19 adults and 13 children with temporary housing.
Red Cross Aids Residents on Stuyvesant Avenue The Chapter provided assistance to two households affected by a fire the evening of December 27 at an apartment building at 354 Stuyvesant Avenue in Brooklyn at which a badly burned 3-year-old girl was rescued and taken to Cornell Hospital's Burn Center. Chapter relief workers arranged for temporary housing for four adults and four children.
Chapter Aids Residents After Emergency Vacate at 17-17 Troutman Street Red Cross volunteers and employees opened a Reception Center at HS 162 at 1309 Willoughby Avenue in Brooklyn on October 18 for families displaced from their apartments at 17-17 Troutman Street in Queens due to an emergency vacate by the Department of Buildings. The Chapter transported residents by bus to the Center in Brooklyn, where 14 families, 30 adults and 1 child, received food and beverages and registered for Red Cross services. The Chapter also provided 10 families of 23 adults and 1 child with emergency overnight housing at local hotels.
Brooklyn Tornado Between Wednesday, August 8 and Sunday, August 12, the Greater New York Chapter provided more than 3500 meals and snacks, as well as 2,000 bottles of water, to individuals affected by the tornado that struck Sunset Park on August 8, as well as to first responders guiding recovery efforts in the community at a Red Cross shelter at P.S. 314, the Luis Muñoz Marin Elementary School.
Blaze on 73rd Street Red Cross responders provided hot food and drinks, hand warmers and mental health counseling to 14 adults and 15 children affected by a 3-alarm blaze that raged through a two-story building at 514 73rd Street on February 8.
The Red Cross provided 11 adults and 2 children with hot food, beverages and clothing allowances after a fire broke out at a two story building at 307 Devoe Street on Sunday, January 7.
