Chapter Assists Flash Flood Victims

The Chapter responded to a flash flood emergency that occurred on Tuesday, June 19 on the Delaware and Sullivan County border along Route 206. More than 20 Red Cross relief workers were deployed to the area to support residents affected by the devastating flood, as well as first responders on the scene. The Red Cross opened a Reception Center at the Roscoe School in Sullivan County, where at least 20 adults received nutritious meals and individual support. ARC/GNY also provided mental health counseling, disaster chaplaincy services, personal care items and clean-up kits to those affected.

Roscoe Floods
The Greater New York Chapter brought comfort and aid to those affected by the devastating rains and flooding that occurred along the Delaware and Sullivan County border on June 19 at a Red Cross Reception Center at the Roscoe School in Sullivan County. More than 50 Chapter volunteers and employees offered assistance and comfort to 23 families from nearby Delaware County driven from their homes,  a total of 47 adults and 10 children who relied on the Red Cross in those first hours after disaster struck.

During the relief operation, which ended on Friday, June 27, Red Cross provided more than 2,000 meals, along with snacks and water, to flood victims, as well as to responders from partner agencies supporting the operation. Mental health counseling and disaster chaplaincy services were also made available to those affected as well as more than $30,000 in emergency assistance.

Shelter for Stranded Riders
In Monticello, New York, in Sullivan County on the evening of March 16, a fierce snowstorm forced Short Line buses to stop running and the Chapter opened a shelter at the Monticello Senior Center where it provided a warm haven for 192 stranded bus passengers and served 200 meals and beverages. The shelter closed Saturday morning as buses went back into service and passengers resumed their travel.

Cottage Street Fire
Red Cross came to the aid of 2 families of 3 adults and 4 children on February 16 after a fire broke out in their home at 44 Cottage Street in Monticello, New York at 12:24 am.

Park Hill Circle Fire
After a 1-alarm fire at a 6-story apartment building at Park Hill Circle on August 20 damaged apartments on the fourth floor, Red Cross relief workers provided aid and comfort to 4 adults and 7 children. Red Cross also arranged for temporary housing for one family of 1 adult and 3 children.

Four adults and five children received Red Cross assistance, including food, beverages and a clothing stipend to replace lost garments after a 1-alarm fire at 31 Steuben Street.

In 2006 in Sullivan County, the chapter:

• Responded to 35 fires and other emergencies
• Assisted 808 adults and children with food, shelter and/or counseling following a disaster

Notable Activities in 2006:

On Saturday, April 23, when a fire broke out at 16 Hamilton Avenue at 12:15 pm, a Red Cross volunteer and a staff member rushed to the scene. They registered nine adults and seven children for further Red Cross aid and provided warm clothing, hot meals and temporary housing for two families of six adults and six children.
