Public Affairs Volunteer
Department: Marketing & Communications
Location: 520 West 49th Street
New York, NY 10019
Responsibilities: Public Affairs (PA) volunteers help the American Red Cross in Greater New York during emergencies, events, or other occasions when the organization needs to speak with the media, elected officials and the community to answer questions and provide information. PAs address media inquiries that arrive at the chapter’s emergency operations center with a return phone call or email from their homes. Key times for such calls are before the evening and early morning local TV newscasts. PA’s can be deployed to the scene of an emergency to convey information to media or others.
Qualifications: Must have excellent communication skills
Experience in the communications field preferred (journalism, public relations, public affairs)
Training: Volunteer Orientation (2 hours)
Fulfilling Our Mission (3 hours)
Public Affairs I (8 hours)
Mass Care (3 hours) (recommended)
Time Commitment: On call weekday evenings/nights (Monday – Friday, 5 pm – 8 am) and weekends (8 am Saturday – 8 am Monday)
