Emergency Communications Representative
Reports To: Emergency Communications Operations Supervisor
Department: Disaster Planning & Response
Location: Manhattan
Category: Full-Time
Primary Function: Provides emergency assistance and communications to American Red Cross clients. Assesses and documents communications for Disaster Services. Helps maintain the Disaster Assessment database.
Responsibilities: 1. Monitors, tracks and documents disaster-related events utilizing NYC fire scanners, Fire Department printer, weather radios, BNN and other communications media. Notifies and dispatches appropriate ARC/GNY staff regarding emergency situations. Recommends and initiates request for additional support needed at disaster sites.

2. Assists clients via telephone and provides information regarding eligibility for ARC/GNY services.

3. Dispenses petty cash for disaster victims, volunteers and employees. Manages petty cash drawer transactions and applies for reimbursement from Accounting of all monies disbursed.

4. Coordinates hotel arrangements for clients in need of lodging.

5. Assists in ARC/NYC disaster assessment database management by reviewing incident paperwork on client registrations and dwelling surveys. Enters incident information into database programs and files hard copy paperwork. Dispenses dwelling damage information via telephone to appropriate personnel. Schedules additional site visits to disaster-affected residences when previous field visits were inadequate.

6. Answers main ARC/GNY phone line. Screens and forwards calls appropriately.

7. Participates in a team that provides on the job training for new Communication Representatives, both employees and volunteers.

8. Performs other duties and special projects as required from time to time.
Qualifications: Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Minimum of two years of customer service experience in a technology driven environment.

Related Skills: Excellent communication skills and strong customer service orientation. Good interpersonal skills. Ability to pay attention to detail, to work well under pressure and in adverse conditions, and to relate to people of different ethnic and economic backgrounds. Knowledge of ARC/GNY programs and services. Ability to work with volunteers. Knowledge of office systems, MS-Office preferred. Bi-lingual preferred.

Other Requirements (including Physical Demands):
Some day and occasional overnight travel required.
May be required to work long hours and a varied schedule.
Ability to lift 25lbs, including but not limited to books and materials.
Participate in DSHR at a local level.
