During the first four months of 2006, staff and volunteers from the American Red Cross in Greater New York have helped more than 2,000 Brooklyn residents affected by 350 disasters--nearly three each day. Now, one of the biggest New York City fires in recent years can be added to the list of emergencies in the borough where ARC/GNY has responded to help emergency personnel and stand ready to support community residents. At the Greenpoint waterfront warehouse fire in early May, the Chapter provided round the clock coverage over four days to support all responders. Area residents were not affected.
The final figures from that deployment indicate that the Chapter utilized three Emergency Response Vehicles (ERVs) and other logistic support, served 2,300 meals (300 breakfasts, 850 lunches and 1,150 dinners), along with more than 1,600 beverages. At least one ERV remained in the community from early Tuesday morning until end of day Friday.
