The mission of the Youth Services Program is to provide young people with meaningful opportunities to help their communities prepare for and respond to emergencies, to receive valuable skills and leadership training and to become a lasting part of the American Red Cross in Greater New York (ARC/GNY) family. Join us today!
This year, we will honor and celebrate the success of all of our youth volunteers, award nominees and award winners at our FIRST EVER Youth Volunteer Recognition and Awards Ceremony to be held at the ARC/GNY Headquarters on Sunday, July 13th from 5:30p.m. 8:30pm. We hope that you can join us for this momentous occasion.
2008 Spring Event: MaskeRED Summary April 24, 2008
The ARC/GNY Youth Group planned and executed another successful annual Spring Event at the chapter headquarters on Thursday, April 24th from 6-10pm.
The Spring Event is a dance hosted every year by the Youth Group that raises money for the Measles Initiative. This year's theme was MaskeRED. A dance with a masquerade feel. With over 300 youth in attendance, and over $3,300 raised, we have brought over 3,300 children the promise of a more healthy future.
The entertainment this year was especially outstanding and noteworthy. For the first time ever performing together, hip hop groups from Harlem and Brooklyn donated their time and talent and brought a spectacular performance to the youth in attendance. The artist Flip and his group composed a Red Cross song specifically for the event!
In order to raise awareness and remind the youth what they donated money for, the Youth Group constructed a Measles Wall, where red dots were posted on a wall with Measles Initiative facts on them. Each dot was sold for $1 and with the purchase of a dot the youth received a measles pin. By the end of the night, they hoped to have cured the wall as people buy their dots and remove them from the wall. Through the dance, the youth volunteers hoped to raise awareness and at the same time have fun.
The Greater New York Chapter ran a successful Youth Emergency Simulation on Friday, April 18th, for members of the Chapter's Youth Group and Youth Disaster Corps (YDC).
