Notable Activities in 2007:
Assistance After 1-Alarm Fire Greater New York responders were on hand minutes after a fire struck a 3-story apartment building at 88-28 75th Street at 4 a.m. on April 15. Five households of 8 adults and 12 children affected by the 1-alarm blaze received Red Cross humanitarian aid for food and clothing, as well as temporary lodging.
Assistance Following Water Main Break After a water main break on February 17 undermined a number of buildings on 41st Avenue, Greater New York employees and volunteers assisted 62 people (50 adults and 12 children) forced from their homes by flooding. The Chapter offered food and beverages to those affected, and provided 6 households of 20 adults and 3 children with temporary housing.
The first disaster response of the new year took place at 4:34 am when Greater New York responders rushed to a 1-alarm fire at a four-story apartment building at 28-49 34th Street. Eight adults received food, beverages and fire clean-up kits and two adults were housed at a local hotel.
Driven into the frigid night by a fast-moving 6-alarm fire, 171 residents, of which 62 were children, of a six-story apartment house in Far Rockaway, received aid and comfort from the Greater New York Chapter on Sunday, February 4. More than 25 Red Cross volunteers and employees opened a Reception Center at nearby Intermediate School 53, where they served beverages, snacks, breakfast and lunch. Red Cross mental health workers also provided counseling services at the Center. The Chapter distributed more than $20,000 in financial assistance in the form of debit cards for food, clothing and other emergency supplies to residents. And about half of the building's occupants - 23 families (47 adults and 21 children) – received emergency overnight housing from Red Cross.
